Why are Filipinos bound for abroad? I can’t remember when my father first left the Philippines for abroad, my father is a retired seaman. When he was still on duty he used to come home at every ten months on ship and one month with us. I and my other two brothers get accustomed to this every year. He tried some business before retiring but was unsuccessful now he has his own electronic repair shop and mobile sound system. My father had always been telling us not to follow his footstep of becoming a seaman, he said that it is very tough in the sea specially those without ranks or they call it “tiktik kalawang”.
My eldest brother before have tried to become a seaman he had all those sorts of training to be enlisted but to he doesn’t have enough experience with his electrical technician course and have had different trainings in catering and food service. He now works in Saudi Arabia as a waiter and has studied short courses in Auto CAD which he wanted to do next. My second brother is now a Teacher and now planning to go abroad, he also had short course in Auto CAD which he thinks will bring him abroad. I have Uncles whose families now migrated to America. I have other relatives also working abroad. I am now in Singapore working in an Oil and Gas construction company my family are all permanent resident of Singapore.
Is this the regular Filipino family where we all have relatives working or migrated to other country? As I know everybody wants to work or settle abroad. I have had good jobs in the Philippines; I once worked in a cement plant and a gas plant but still find job abroad. The salary is enough for surviving everyday but we all have our dreams to build a home and some luxury. Manpower is one of the Philippines resources, we take pride to that. But we hope that we could also go back and be with our family again. When are we going home? Filipino
